This new suite by composer/percussionist Alastair Kerr, draws on the music and iconography of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé. Based on ten of the primary Orixás, or deities, each movement features the traditional rhythms of Candomblé, bringing a unique energy and spirit to the music. Presented by Panorama Brasil, this suite will be performed by some of Australia’s finest exponents of Brazilian music.
The drumming of Candomblé has been central to the development of many of Brazil’s musical styles, and the traditional rhythms are used as the rhythmic basis for each movement. Kerr is recognised as one of Australia’s leading performers of Brazilian music, and he has spent the last three years studying the drumming of Candomblé in depth. Together with Panorama Brasil, he brings the intensity, beauty and expanse of Brazilian music to Kew Court House.
